How to Split Screen on a Chromebook?

Splitting the screen on a Chromebook lets you view two windows side by side. There are a few easy ways to do it.

Method 1 — Keyboard shortcut (fastest):

1. Click the window you want to dock to make it active.
2. Press Alt + [ to snap it to the left half of the screen.
3. Press Alt + ] to snap it to the right half.
4. Do the opposite shortcut on a second window to fill the other half.

Method 2 — Drag to snap:

1. Click and hold the window's top bar.
2. Drag it to the far left or far right edge of the screen until you see an outline appear, then release. The window snaps to that half.
3. Drag a second window to the opposite edge to fill the other half.

Method 3 — Use the maximize button:

1. Click and hold (or long-press) the maximize button (the square) in the top-right corner of a window.
2. Arrows appear — choose the left or right arrow to dock the window to that side.

Method 4 — Tablet mode (touchscreen Chromebooks):

1. Open the overview (swipe up and hold, or the overview key).
2. Drag one app's thumbnail to the left or right side of the screen to snap it, then tap a second app for the other half.

Tip: Once two windows are snapped, you can drag the divider line in the middle left or right to resize how much space each window takes.
