Speeds on UW are often hundreds of Mbps when the cell isn't congested; Nationwide 5G is frequently much closer to good LTE. Exact numbers vary by city and time of day.
Not the same as 5G UC: 5G UC (Ultra Capacity) is T-Mobile's equivalent marketing badge for its fast 5G. Seeing UW means you're on Verizon's network branding; seeing UC means T-Mobile's. Same idea ("this is the fast 5G"), different carrier.
Why it appears and disappears: UW needs you to be in range of those mid-band or mmWave radios. Walk out of that footprint and the icon drops back to plain 5G or LTE. Indoor buildings, especially ones that block high-frequency radio, lose UW first.
Plan and phone: the device must be a 5G model that supports Verizon's UW bands, and the line has to include 5G access. UW is not a paid add-on you toggle; it's which radio layer you're on at that moment.
