How to Draw a Turkey?

What you need: a pencil, an eraser, paper, and optionally colors (brown, red, orange, yellow).

Step-by-step

1. Draw the body. Sketch a large oval (slightly egg-shaped, wider at the bottom) in the lower-center of your page. Leave plenty of room above and behind it for the tail.
2. Add the tail feathers. Behind the body, draw a fan of feathers radiating outward — start with one long feather at the top center, then add feathers evenly to each side, curving down. Each feather is a rounded, elongated shape. Adding a second, smaller layer of feathers in front of the first gives it depth.
3. Draw the head and neck. At the upper front of the body, add a small circle for the head connected by a short curved neck.
4. Add the face details.
   • A small triangular beak.
   • The snood — the floppy flap of skin hanging over the beak.
   • The wattle — the red flap under the chin.
   • A small dot for the eye.
5. Add the wing. Draw a curved, teardrop-shaped wing on the side of the body.
6. Add the legs and feet. Two short legs below the body with three forward-pointing toes each.
7. Outline, erase, and color. Darken your final lines, erase the guides, and color: a brown body, red wattle and snood, an orange/yellow beak and legs, and tail feathers in bands of brown, orange, yellow, and red.

Easiest version for kids — the handprint turkey: Trace your hand on paper. Your thumb becomes the head and neck, and your four fingers become the tail feathers. Add a beak, wattle, eye, and legs, then color each finger a different color.
