How to Draw a Rose?

What you need

• A pencil (and eraser)
• Paper
• Optional: pen for outlining, colored pencils for shading

Step-by-step

1. Draw the center spiral. In the middle, sketch a small spiral or a loose oval swirl. This is the tightly furled heart of the rose that the petals wrap around.
2. Add the inner petals. Around the spiral, draw a few small curved, cupping lines — like little U or teardrop shapes hugging the center. Roses have overlapping petals, so let them wrap around.
3. Build outward with larger petals. Add progressively bigger curved petals around the inner ones, angling them outward. Alternate their positions so the edges overlap naturally rather than lining up.
4. Shape the outer bloom. Finish the outermost petals with wider, more open curves that flare out and may fold at the tips. The whole bloom should read as a rounded shape.
5. Add the stem and sepals. Draw two lines down for the stem, and add small pointed sepals (the green leaf-like parts) where the flower meets the stem.
6. Add leaves. Draw a few pointed, oval leaves with a center vein and lightly serrated (jagged) edges along the stem.
7. Refine and shade. Darken your final outlines, erase guide lines, and add shading — make the center and the areas where petals overlap darker, and the outer edges lighter, to give it depth.

Tips: Keep early lines light. Real petals are irregular, so don't aim for perfect symmetry — slight variation looks more natural.
