How to Alphabetize in Google Sheets?

Select the cells, open Data, and choose Sort sheet or Sort range, A → Z. Sort sheet moves every column by the key column so rows stay together. Sort range only sorts what you highlighted — use it when the rest of the tab shouldn't move.

Sort the whole sheet by one column

  1. Click the letter of the column (A, B, …) or any cell in it.
  2. Data → Sort sheet → Sort sheet by column X, A → Z.
  3. If row 1 is a title, use Data → Sort range → Advanced range sorting options and tick Data has header row, then pick the column and A–Z.

A → Z vs. Z → A: A–Z is alphabetical (and smallest numbers first). Z–A is reverse.

Keep rows together: never sort a single column of names if the emails are in the next column unless that whole range is selected — you'll mismatch rows. Highlight all related columns or sort the sheet.

Filter view: the funnel on the header also has A–Z for a quick visual sort without changing the underlying sheet as permanently in some workflows; Data → Sort is the straightforward alphabetize.

Case and blanks: Sheets' default sort is case-insensitive for letters. Blanks often sink to the bottom or top depending on the option — check the result once.

How do you alphabetize in Google Sheets without moving the header?

Use Sort range with Advanced options and check Data has header row, then sort A to Z.
