1. Park level and set the parking brake. A slope makes the reading lie.
2. Engine off. On most cars you wait 5–10 minutes after shutdown (some manuals say check stone-cold in the morning — follow the sticker under the hood if it conflicts).
3. Open the hood and find the yellow or orange loop labeled oil / engine oil.
4. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with a rag, reinsert all the way, then pull it again.
5. Read the oil on the tip: it should sit between the two holes or hash marks. Below MIN means add; at or above MAX means don't add.
6. If you add oil, use the viscosity in the owner's manual (for example 0W-20), a little at a time, and recheck so you don't overfill.

What the oil should look like: amber to light brown on a recently serviced engine is normal. Very black isn't automatically an emergency on a high-mileage engine, but milky (coolant mix) or glittery metal is a reason to stop driving and get it checked. Checking level is this procedure; a shop oil-life monitor or mileage interval is how you decide on a change.

No dipstick: some cars (certain BMW, VW, Mercedes, and others) use an electronic oil-level menu in the cluster or infotainment. The owner's manual shows that path; don't assume a missing stick means you skip checks.

Don't overfill. Too much oil can foam or damage seals. Add in small pours and recheck.
