How Long Should a Car Battery Last?

What shortens the life

• Heat. High under-hood and ambient temperatures speed up the chemical wear inside the battery — hot climates are harder on batteries than cold ones, even though cold is when a weak battery shows itself (slow cranking).
• Short trips. The alternator doesn't get enough time to fully recharge what the starter used.
• Parasitic drain. A glove-box light, aftermarket stereo, or stuck module that stays awake flattens the battery repeatedly.
• Age of the charging system. A weak alternator or bad cables makes the battery work in a partial-charge state, which shortens it.

Signs it's near the end (replace/test, don't wait for a no-start)

• Engine cranks slowly, especially in the morning.
• Dim headlights at idle that brighten when you rev.
• Battery / charging warning light on the dash.
• Swollen or leaking case, or a rotten-egg smell.
• The car needs a jump more than once.

Testing beats the calendar: auto-parts stores will often load-test a battery for free. A 4-year-old battery that tests strong can stay; a 2-year-old one that fails a load test should go. Extreme cold doesn't "kill" a healthy battery overnight — it reveals one that was already weak.

AGM vs. conventional: AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries, common on cars with auto start-stop, often last on the longer end of the range and cost more, but they still follow the same 3–5-year ballpark rather than lasting a decade.
