How to Change a Car Air Filter?

What you need

• A new air filter that matches your car (check your owner's manual or an auto-parts lookup)

Step-by-step

1. Turn off the engine and pop the hood.
2. Find the air filter box. It's usually a large black plastic box near the top of the engine, with a big hose leading out of it.
3. Open the housing. Undo the metal clips, or remove the screws/clamps holding the lid on.
4. Remove the old filter. Lift it out and notice which way it faces — take a photo if you're unsure. Note how dirty it is; a filter clogged with dirt and leaves is due for replacement.
5. Clean out the box. Wipe out any leaves or debris sitting in the bottom of the housing.
6. Insert the new filter. Place it in the same orientation as the old one (the rubber sealing edge should seat properly against the housing).
7. Close it up. Reattach the lid and re-clip or re-screw it, making sure it's sealed. Shut the hood.

How often: Most cars need a new engine air filter every 12,000–15,000 miles (about once a year), but replace it sooner if it looks dirty or you drive on dusty roads. A clean filter helps engine performance and fuel efficiency.
