How to Check Engine Oil?

Before you start

• Park on level ground — a slope gives a false reading.
• Turn the engine off. Most manufacturers want the engine cool or only warm, and the car sitting for 5–10 minutes so the oil drains back into the pan. (A few cars specify checking warm — your owner's manual is the authority.)
• Have a rag or paper towel ready.

Step-by-step

1. Open the hood and find the dipstick — usually a brightly coloured loop or handle (often yellow or orange) marked with an oil symbol. Don't confuse it with the transmission dipstick.
2. Pull the dipstick all the way out and wipe it clean with your rag. The first reading is unreliable because oil splashes around while driving.
3. Reinsert it fully, all the way down, then pull it straight back out.
4. Read the level. Look at where the oil film ends. There are two marks — MIN and MAX (or two dots, hatch marks, or an "L" and "H"). The oil should sit between them, ideally near the upper mark.
5. Note the condition while you're there (see below).
6. Reinsert the dipstick securely and close the hood.

How to read what you see

• Between the marks — you're fine.
• At or below MIN — add oil. The gap between MIN and MAX is typically about 1 quart (1 litre), so if you're at the bottom mark, add roughly half a quart, wait a few minutes, and re-check.
• Above MAX — overfilled, which is genuinely harmful. Too much oil can foam and damage seals; have some drained.

Checking the oil's condition

• Light amber/honey — fresh, healthy oil.
• Dark brown or black — normal with use, but very dark and thick oil suggests it's due for a change.
• Gritty or with metal flecks — get it inspected.
• Milky or foamy — could indicate coolant mixing with oil; see a mechanic.

How to add oil: Unscrew the oil filler cap (marked with the oil symbol, separate from the dipstick), add oil a little at a time using a funnel, and re-check the dipstick after each addition. Use the grade specified in your manual (for example 5W-30).

How often: Checking about once a month and before long trips is a good habit. If you're topping up frequently, you may have a leak or an engine burning oil — worth investigating.
