How to Clean Birkenstocks?

Cleaning Birkenstocks means treating two parts differently: the suede/leather footbed and the straps (which may be leather, suede/nubuck, Birko-Flor, or EVA). The cork sole also needs occasional care.

What you need:

• A suede brush or soft-bristled brush
• Mild soap and water
• A cloth
• Cork sealer (optional, for maintenance)

Cleaning the footbed:

1. Brush it dry first to remove loose dirt.
2. Scrub gently. Dip the brush in a little mild soapy water and lightly scrub the footbed. Don't soak it — use minimal moisture.
3. Wipe and blot with a damp then dry cloth.
4. Air dry away from direct sun or heat (heat can crack the cork).

Cleaning the straps by material:

• Smooth leather: wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap; condition occasionally.
• Suede/nubuck: use a dry suede brush and a suede eraser for scuffs — avoid soaking.
• Birko-Flor (synthetic): wipe clean with a damp soapy cloth.
• EVA (all-rubber pairs): these are waterproof and can be rinsed or washed with soap and water.

Caring for the cork: Every so often, apply cork sealer to keep it from drying and crumbling.

Avoid: Submerging non-EVA Birkenstocks, putting them in the washing machine, or using excessive water on the cork and footbed.
