How to Clean a Toaster?

Cleaning a toaster is quick and mostly about clearing out crumbs (which are a fire risk if they build up) and wiping the exterior. The golden rule: never put a toaster in water.

What you need:

• A pastry brush or soft toothbrush
• White vinegar or mild dish soap
• A microfiber cloth

Step-by-step:

1. Unplug it and let it cool. Never clean a toaster while it's plugged in.
2. Empty the crumb tray. Slide out the tray at the bottom, dump the crumbs, wash it in warm soapy water, and dry it fully before reinserting.
3. Shake out loose crumbs. Hold the toaster over the sink or trash, turn it upside down, and gently shake to release crumbs stuck inside.
4. Brush the interior. Use a soft brush to loosen crumbs from the slots and around the heating elements. Be gentle — don't bend the wire elements.
5. Wipe the outside. Clean the exterior with a cloth dampened in a vinegar-water mix or mild soapy water. For stainless steel, wipe with the grain and buff dry to avoid streaks.
6. Dry and reassemble. Make sure everything (especially the crumb tray) is completely dry before plugging back in.

Tip: Empty the crumb tray weekly if you use the toaster daily.
