How to Clean a Humidifier?

The safest, most reliable way to clean a humidifier is with white vinegar (to dissolve mineral scale) and, optionally, a little hydrogen peroxide or bleach solution (to disinfect). Aim to do a light clean every few days and a deeper clean weekly.

What you need:

• White vinegar
• A soft brush or old toothbrush
• A clean cloth
• Distilled or clean water

Step-by-step:

1. Unplug it and take it apart. Empty any leftover water from the tank and base — never leave standing water sitting in a humidifier.
2. Add vinegar to the base. Pour undiluted (or 50/50) white vinegar into the base where mineral buildup collects and let it sit for 20–30 minutes to loosen scale.
3. Fill the tank with vinegar and water. Add about 1–2 cups of vinegar, swirl it around to coat the inside, and let it soak.
4. Scrub gently. Use a soft brush or toothbrush to remove mineral deposits and any film. Avoid harsh scrubbers that can scratch plastic.
5. Disinfect (optional but recommended weekly). Fill the tank with a solution of 1 teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water (or a hydrogen-peroxide rinse), let it sit ~20 minutes, then empty.
6. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse every part with clean water until there is no vinegar or bleach smell.
7. Air dry. Let all parts dry completely before reassembling.
