PS5 (DualSense) and PS4 (DualShock 4):
- There's no built-in calibration menu on PlayStation consoles. Instead: reset the controller with the reset button on the back (hold ~5 seconds with a paperclip), then reconnect with the USB cable.
- Clean with isopropyl alcohol as above — this resolves a large share of PS5 drift.
- To test and fine-tune, connect the controller to a PC and use the Steam controller settings or a gamepad-test site to check the resting position and adjust dead zones.
- Sony's warranty covers DualSense drift, and Sony has run free repair programmes for it — check your warranty before buying a replacement.
Xbox (Series X|S and Xbox One):
- Open the Xbox Accessories app (on console or Windows) and update the controller firmware — this alone fixes some cases.
- Clean the stick base with isopropyl alcohol the same way.
- Xbox controllers let you calibrate and set custom dead zones per stick in the Xbox Accessories app under Configure, which is very effective for mild drift.
Nintendo Switch (including Switch 2 and Joy-Cons):
- Go to System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks, then follow the prompts.
- Clean around the stick with isopropyl alcohol.
- Nintendo has historically repaired Joy-Con drift free of charge in many regions, even out of warranty — contact Nintendo support before paying for anything.
If cleaning and calibration don't work:
- Replace the stick module. Replacement potentiometer modules are cheap, but this requires disassembly and soldering.
- Upgrade to Hall effect sticks. These use magnets instead of physical contacts, so they don't wear out and effectively can't develop drift. Replacement modules exist for most controllers, and some newer third-party controllers ship with them.
- Claim warranty or a repair programme before doing any of the above — opening the controller will void it.
Preventing it: keep hands clean, store controllers covered and away from dust, avoid slamming or over-extending sticks, and blow out the stick bases with compressed air every few months.
