What Does Patchouli Smell Like?

The usual descriptors

• Earthy / woody — the first thing most people notice.

Why opinions split so hard: patchouli is polarizing. Some people read it as rich, warm, and sophisticated; others as dirty, "hippie," or like old clothes. A little in a blend smells different from a straight essential-oil sniff, which is much louder and more camphoraceous.
