What Do Mice Eat?

Mice are omnivores. Their natural preference is for grains, seeds, nuts, and fruit, but they'll readily eat insects, meat, and almost any food scrap they find — which is exactly why they end up in our homes.

What mice eat in the wild:

• Seeds and grains — their dietary staple.
• Nuts, berries, and fruit.
• Plants — including grass, roots, stems, leaves, and young shoots.
• Insects and invertebrates — beetles, caterpillars, crickets, grasshoppers, snails, and worms.
• Fungi and carrion.

Field mice in particular rely heavily on seeds, grains, nuts, berries, and insects, and will store food caches for winter.

Do mice eat insects and meat? Yes. Mice are opportunistic and will eat insects, grubs, and even small amounts of meat. They'll eat cockroaches and other bugs when available, and in scarcity mice have been known to scavenge dead animals and even resort to cannibalism.

The cheese myth: Despite every cartoon you've seen, cheese is not a mouse's favourite food. Mice actually prefer sweet and high-carbohydrate foods — grains, seeds, fruit, chocolate, and especially peanut butter, which is why pest controllers use peanut butter rather than cheese as bait. The strong smell of some cheeses can even be off-putting to them.

What mice eat inside a house:

• Pantry staples — cereal, oats, rice, pasta, flour, bread, crackers.
• Pet food and birdseed — a very common and often-overlooked food source.
• Sweets and chocolate, nuts, and dried fruit.
• Food waste in bins and crumbs under appliances.
• They also gnaw non-food items — paper, cardboard, insulation, and wiring — mostly for nesting material rather than nutrition.

A mouse eats surprisingly little, roughly 3–4 grams a day, but it nibbles at many different sources, contaminating far more food than it consumes.

Can mice eat chocolate? They'll eat it eagerly and are strongly attracted to it. For pet mice, though, chocolate should be avoided — as with many animals, it's not good for them, and their diet should be a proper commercial mouse or rodent mix.

What do baby mice eat? Newborn mice (pups) drink only their mother's milk for about the first three weeks, then gradually move onto solid food, starting with soft, easily chewed items and the same seeds and grains as adults.

What eats mice? They're prey for a long list of predators: owls, hawks, snakes, foxes, weasels, cats, and larger rodents like rats, which will kill and eat mice.

Keeping mice out: Store dry food in airtight glass or metal containers (they chew through cardboard and plastic bags), don't leave pet food out overnight, clean up crumbs, secure bins, and seal entry gaps — a mouse can squeeze through an opening the size of a dime.
