How to Whistle?

Whistling with your lips (the basic way)

1. Wet your lips. Slightly damp lips seal and vibrate better than dry ones.
2. Purse your lips into a small, rounded "O," pulling them in a little over your teeth. The opening should be small.
3. Position your tongue. Rest the tip of your tongue low, near the bottom teeth, and let the back/sides relax. The tongue shapes the air channel.
4. Blow gently and steadily through the small opening — don't blast air. At first you'll just hear rushing air.
5. Adjust until you get a tone. Make tiny changes to your lip tightness, the size of the opening, and your tongue position. When it "clicks," you'll hear a clear note.
6. Change pitch by moving your tongue and jaw — moving the tongue forward and tightening the lips raises the pitch; relaxing lowers it.

Tips

• Start quiet. Loudness comes later; a clear tone comes first.
• Small, patient adjustments matter more than blowing harder.
• You can also whistle inward (drawing air in), which some people find easier at first.

Loud finger whistle (advanced): For the piercing two-finger whistle, you fold your tongue back and use two fingers to hold your lips against your teeth, directing air down over your tongue — but that's a harder technique to master after the basic lip whistle.
