How to Program a Garage Door Opener?

Programming a garage door remote almost always uses the "Learn" button on the motor unit mounted to the ceiling. The exact button color and steps vary by brand (LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, etc.), but the general process is the same.

Programming a handheld remote:

1. Find the Learn button. Look on the back or side of the motor unit on the ceiling — you may need to remove the light cover. It's usually a colored button (purple, orange, red, green, or yellow) near an LED.
2. Press the Learn button and release it. An LED light will turn on or start blinking, giving you about 30 seconds to do the next step.
3. Press the button on your remote you want to use. Press and hold it for a second or two.
4. Wait for confirmation. The opener's light will blink, or you'll hear a click — that means it learned the remote.
5. Test it by pressing the remote to open/close the door.

Programming a car's built-in buttons (HomeLink/Car2U): These often require training the car button to the remote first, then pressing the Learn button on the motor unit. Because steps vary by car and opener, check both manuals — but the Learn-button step is still central.

Programming a keypad (entry code): Enter a chosen PIN on the keypad, press the Learn button on the motor, then re-enter the PIN to save it.

Tips:

• To erase all remotes (e.g., after buying a home or losing a remote), hold the Learn button until the LED goes out (about 6–10 seconds); this clears the memory so you can reprogram only the remotes you have.
• Replace the remote battery if programming won't take.
