How to Install RAM?

Installing RAM (memory) in a desktop PC is one of the easiest upgrades. The keys are buying compatible RAM, avoiding static electricity, and lining up the module correctly.

Before you start:

• Check compatibility. Confirm your motherboard's supported type (e.g., DDR4 vs DDR5), max capacity, and speed. RAM types are not interchangeable.
• Avoid static. Work on a hard surface, unplug the PC, and touch a metal part of the case (or wear an anti-static wrist strap) to ground yourself before handling components.

Step-by-step (desktop):

1. Power down and unplug the computer. Hold the power button a few seconds to discharge leftover power.
2. Open the case — usually remove the side panel.
3. Locate the RAM slots. They're the long slots next to the CPU. Check your manual for which slots to use for dual-channel (often slots 2 and 4).
4. Open the clips. Push down the plastic retaining clips at the ends of the slot(s) so they flip open.
5. Line up the notch. RAM has a notch that only lines up one way with the ridge in the slot — match them so you don't force it in backward.
6. Press it in firmly. Push straight down on both ends of the module with even pressure until the clips snap up and lock into the notches on the sides of the stick. It takes a firm press.
7. Confirm it's seated — the clips should be closed and the module level.
8. Close the case, plug in, and boot. Check that the system recognizes the new memory (in the BIOS or your OS's system info).

Laptop note: Many laptops have RAM behind a small bottom panel; the sticks sit at an angle and clip flat. Some modern laptops have soldered (non-upgradeable) RAM, so check first.

Tip: If the PC won't boot after installing, re-seat the RAM — a module that isn't fully clicked in is the most common cause.
