Should you tip movers at all? It's not mandatory, and no reputable company requires it. But moving is heavy, skilled, physically punishing work, crews are often paid modestly, and tipping is a well-established norm in the industry. Most people do tip when the job goes well.

The percentage approach: some people tip 10–20% of the total moving bill, split among the crew. This works well for smaller local moves but can produce an odd number on an expensive long-distance move — for those, the per-mover, per-day method is usually fairer.

When it's fair to tip less, or not at all: items were broken or handled carelessly, the crew turned up very late without explanation, they were rude, or they padded the hours. Tipping is a reward for good service and it's reasonable to withhold it.

How to hand it over — practical tips

• Tip each mover individually and directly, in cash. If you hand a lump sum to the foreman, it may not get split evenly.
• Use cash where possible. Some companies let you add a tip to a card payment, but cash reaches the crew immediately and in full.
• Tip at the end, once everything is unloaded and placed. On a multi-day move, tip at the end of each day, since the crew may change.
• If different crews load and unload, tip each crew separately.
• Have small bills ready before moving day, since you won't want to hunt for an ATM mid-move.

Beyond the tip, crews genuinely appreciate: cold drinks and water (especially in summer), buying lunch for the team, keeping a bathroom accessible and clear, and leaving a good online review with the movers named.

Two things to check before you decide: ask whether the company has a no-tipping policy (a few do), and look over your final invoice for a gratuity already included — it occasionally is, particularly with full-service and long-distance moves.
