Why there isn't a round 52: a week is 7 days by convention. Earth's orbit isn't a multiple of 7 days, so the calendar year can't be an integer number of weeks without leftover days (or a leap day).
Week 53: ISO 8601 weeks start on Monday. If a year has Thursday in the first ISO week in the right way, it can contain 53 numbered weeks. That's a numbering quirk, not a 53rd full seven-day block added to every year.
"52 weeks" in contracts and pay: HR and lenders often treat a year as 52 weeks (sometimes 52.14 for annualizing a weekly wage: weekly pay × 52.14). Those are payroll conventions built on the leftover-day math above.
52 weeks vs. 12 months: months aren't equal to 4 weeks each (4 × 12 = 48). "A month is 4 weeks" undercounts; 52 weeks is the better whole-week picture of a year, with the +1 or +2 days still sitting outside those 52.
