Can Dogs Have Corn Cobs?

Dogs should not have corn cobs under any circumstances. While the corn kernels themselves are generally safe in moderation, corn cobs are dangerous because they are indigestible and can cause serious intestinal blockages. These blockages may lead to life-threatening issues like vomiting, refusal to eat or drink, dehydration, pain, and in severe cases, organ damage or rupture of the intestines.

The tough, fibrous nature of corn cobs means they do not break down in a dog's digestive system and can get stuck, causing choking or obstruction. Even small pieces can cause internal scratches or tears as they move through the gut.

If a dog is suspected to have eaten a corn cob, immediate veterinary care is crucial because untreated blockages can be fatal. To safely share corn, remove it entirely from the cob before giving it to your dog, and avoid seasoning or additives.
